We hire talented, experienced and knowledgeable doctors, technicians and customer service representatives. All staff participates in extensive training and continual education, and many staff achieve advanced certifications.

Medical Staff

Penny Poole, Practice Manager is a graduate of Argosy University and joined AEVS in 2010. Her favorite part of working is seeing pets come in lateral recumbent and then going home walking and tail wagging. She has three beautiful daughters Kaycee, Samantha and Alexis, many dogs, cats and three horses. During her free time she enjoys painting.

Denise Hodge, DVM joined AEVS in 2008. Prior to relocating to Rochester, Dr. Hodge lived and practiced medicine in Chicago, IL. She graduated from the University of Illinois Veterinary Medical School and did her undergraduate work at Loyola University Chicago. Dr. Hodge has also received specialty training in both abdominal and cardiac ultrasound. Her primary work interests include Emergency and Critical Care medicine as well as Internal medicine. She enjoys hiking with her dog Brooks as well as biking, swimming and reading.

Dr. Shantel Julius, D.V.M joined AEVS in 2015. Prior to that, she worked in small animal general practice. She is a graduate of the University of Minnesota's College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Julius's special interests include the human-animal bond, surgery, ophthalmology, internal medicine, and emergency-critical care. In her time away from the clinic, Dr. Julius participates in competitive canine agility with her mini schnauzer Pyper and English Setter Finn, trains canine nosework with her mini schnauzer Sasha and standard schnauzer Stone, participates in competitive running, enjoys horse back riding with her quarter horse JR, and enjoys leisure time at home with her husband and pets, including two black kitties. Dr. Julius has a special affinity for schnauzers in general, and heads a local schnauzer rescue.

Maddie Shaw, DVM joined the AEVS team in 2016. She is a graduate of the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. She completed a rotating internship with an emphasis on emergency and critical care at the Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Shaw’s interests include emergency & critical care medicine along with surgery. Outside of work, she enjoys hiking, playing volleyball and Frisbee golf, reading fantasy novels, and completing puzzles. She lives in Rochester with her boyfriend and two orange cats, Meeko and Juno.
